Natural stone typically comes in 12”x12”, 13”x13”, 16”x16”, and 18”x18″ tiles, allowing the homeowner to determine the size that best suits the room. Choose between a polished bull edge with a rounded appearance, or a polished straight edge for a modern look.
Marble is classic metamorphic rock and ideal for dining rooms, foyers, and hallways. It became popular in Ancient Rome and Greece and has stood the test of time. The range of color patterns give marble a refined, sophisticated look. Most marble features veins of color that stand out from the base color, imbuing it with its own natural design. It can be found in a range of colors and accents including light cappuccino, white, gold, dark cappuccino, crema breccia, caramelo, and more. While marble is durable, it is porous and not the best choice for kitchens where it may stain. However, it adds a breathtaking, elegant quality to other rooms in the home.
If you are looking for durability and strength, granite is the perfect choice. Granite is the hardest stone, second only to diamonds. Granite resists scratching and stains and is ideal for kitchen floors and other high traffic areas. Natural granite colors include shades of brown, black, cool blues, golds, creams, greens, and grays. Granite can even look chic in foyers and bathrooms with a high gloss finish.
Travertine is a porous form of limestone with an interesting pitted surface. Depending on the techniques used, it can create a variety of looks. The small holes can be filled with cement or resin to give the tiles a solid look. Or the holes can be left empty to create a textured look. Travertine is then polished giving it a finish anywhere from honed to glossy. The filled in cavities remain dull after polishing, creating an intriguing contrast in the tiles. It’s earthy, warm tones are perfect for any room in the house. It can also be used to add some interest to patios and garden paths.
Slate is a fine-grained, dense, waterproof stone. It’s perfect for patios, around the pool, and other outdoor projects. Also, using slate indoors can create a rustic look in any room. The stone has a textured look due to the clefting on its surface. Slate is available in nearly every color imaginable, from lavender to gold.
